Kolkata: Varun Chakaravarthy, the spinner for Kolkata Knight Riders, has received a fine amounting to 25% of his match fees along with a demerit point due to a violation of the IPL Code of Conduct during a recent match against Chennai Super Kings.
In a match held at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, CSK, who are no longer in contention for the playoffs, triumphed over KKR by two wickets, effectively eliminating Ajinkya Rahane's team from the race for the top four.
According to the IPL's announcement, Chakaravarthy acknowledged his Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the penalty imposed by the Match Referee. The decision made by the Match Referee regarding Level 1 breaches is considered final and binding.
Article 2.5 addresses any 'language, action, or gesture directed at a batter upon their dismissal that could incite an aggressive response from the dismissed player.'
After taking the wicket of Dewald Brewis, who scored 52 runs and significantly contributed to CSK's victory, Chakaravarthy gestured for him to leave the field.
KKR is set to play their last two league matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17, both of which will take place away from home.
